The Value of a Local Tackle Shop
Endless possibilities and hours spent staring.
Childhood Memories
A lot of my childhood memories are of going into tackle shops with my dad or my granddad.
The walls lined with rods, shelves full of reels, line, hooks… lures everywhere.
You’d just stand there in awe, your eyes jumping from one thing to the next.
I can’t pass a tackle shop anywhere without dropping in. And there isn’t one within a fair radius that my own kids haven’t been in with me more times than I can count at this stage.
I still use some of those same childhood tackle shops to this day.
When I take them in now, I’m bombarded with question after question, their own eyes jumping from one thing to the next.
I love it.
And I catch myself wondering… did those men do this to me deliberately? Because I know, without a doubt, I’m doing it with my own kids.
They built those core memories in me. They instilled that love… that curiosity… that obsession with all things fishing.
I suspect they were just as deliberate in that as they were in their own angling.
The sort of sight that sparks a lifelong obsession.
Price vs Value
We all feel the squeeze now. It’s getting more and more expensive just to get by.
And the temptation is always there — find what you want as cheap as possible, from anywhere in the world.
But pause for a second.
Because price and value are two very different things.
Now, I know we can’t always afford everything we want from local shops. There are overheads, and that shows in the price.
And if it’s a choice between that or not fishing at all — buy the thing, wherever you need to, and just get out fishing.
But if it won’t break you financially… maybe take a second and ask yourself where your money is better spent.
Because online retail is great. It really is.
It’s great for finding things you just can’t get locally.
But a lot of the time, you’re buying blind.
You haven’t held it. You haven’t felt it. You don’t really know what you’re getting until it arrives.
Even if you do order from a local tackle shop, if it doesn’t feel right when it lands, you’re not thinking about sending it halfway around the world.
More Than Just Gear
Tackle shops are one of the greatest sources of knowledge an angler can tap into.
They know the local waters.
They know what’s coming in and what’s not.
They know what’s working… and what isn’t.
If you don’t know what you’re looking for, or what you actually need, they’ll guide you.
Yes, they’re there to make money — every business is.
But no tackle shop lasts through years of ups and downs by taking advantage of people.
They last because they look after anglers.
And just as importantly, they’ll tell you when something isn’t right for you.
If there’s something you want that you just can’t find, there’s a good chance they can get it.
That JDM blank you’ve heard about but never seen anywhere? Don’t be surprised if your local shop can make a call and have it on the way.
Feeling Gear Before You Buy
If you’re thinking about a rod, maybe stuck between two and not sure how they’ll balance with the reel you already have — bring it in.
They’ll let you stick it on, try both, and actually feel what works.
And sometimes, they’ll save you from buying the wrong thing altogether — which is worth more than any small saving you might find elsewhere.
Behind every wall of lures is years of local knowledge.
Relationships Matter
The relationships you build with your local tackle shop over the years make a real difference.
When something special comes in — a deal too good to miss on a dream rod — it doesn’t always make it as far as the shelf.
Sometimes, it’s a quiet call to someone they know will appreciate it.
That’s happened to me recently.
Keeping It Alive
When you spend money in your local tackle shop, that money stays closer to home — circulating through the same communities we all rely on.
Everyone benefits.
And we help keep those vital resources afloat (pun intended) for the next generation of anglers.
Quality reels for every budget and every type of angler.
Real Value
Like everyone else, I want the best deal.
But the best doesn’t always mean the lowest price.
In fact, my most expensive gear has come from brick-and-mortar tackle shops here in Ireland.
I trust them.
I know what I’m getting.
I can see it, handle it, and make sure it’s right before I buy.
And if there’s ever a problem, I know it’ll be sorted.
Put all of that together… and that’s value.
Real value — the kind you won’t find anywhere else.
A Note on the Shops Listed on My Site
On my site, you’ll see some of the tackle shops and stockists I use regularly. They’re places I’ve dealt with over the years, continue to go back to, and I’m happy to recommend.
It’s by no means a full list. There are lots more across the country I use regularly too. Hopefully more of them will be added as time goes on.
In the mean time, if you’re looking for somewhere near you, a quick Google search will point you in the right direction.
